Ritucharya - Seasonal Regimens
The term Ritucharya is derived from two words, Ritu means ‘season’ and Charya means ‘regimens or conduct’. Rithucharya is therefore the Sanskrit word for seasonal regimen.
In Ayurveda, adopting regimens as per the changes in season is one of the most important aspects of preventative care. Changes in the nature of the universal factors like sun, moon, stars, wind etc. are responsible for the changes in climate. Ayurveda Acharyas keenly observed the changes in seasons with respect to the nature of the sun and the movements of the moon, stars, winds, rainfall etc. and recommended the regimens to maintain the homeostasis of the body.
According to Acharya Charaka the strength and complexion of a person can be increased by the understanding and practice of proper regimens according to seasonal changes.
Establishing a close relationship between Man and Nature results in, seasonal changes producing various effects upon human body and nature. Lack of proper adjustments in lifestyle and diet according to seasonal changes lead to physical aliments or imbalances. People are either unaware or ignore the proper foods, clothing and accessories that should be followed according to seasonal changes, which in turn lead to the decline of homeostasis and a variety of diseases.
Thus the knowledge of Ritucharya reveals the truth that the key to survival lies in adapting with the changes in Nature.
